China Iron Angle Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the iron angle price stood at $965 per ton (FOB, China), shrinking by -15.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,249 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($2,539 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bangladesh ($563 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Iron Angle Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was iron or non-alloy steel; t sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height less than 80mm ($1,463 per ton), while the average price for exports of h-sections of of non-alloy steel ($857 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: iron or non-alloy steel; l or t sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of 80mm or more (+4.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Iron Angle Exports
In September 2022, exports of angles, shapes and sections (of iron or non-alloy steel) from China expanded sharply to 244K tons, increasing by 9.7% compared with August 2022. Overall, exports posted a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 59% against the previous month. The exports peaked in September 2022.
In value terms, iron angle exports shrank to $236M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 69% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 269K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
China Iron Angle Exports by Type
H-sections of of non-alloy steel (153K tons) was the largest type of iron angle exported from China, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, h-sections of of non-alloy steel exceeded the volume of the second product type, u-sections of non-alloy steel (21K tons), sevenfold. Iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm (20K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of h-sections of of non-alloy steel stood at +15.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: u-sections of non-alloy steel (+1.9% per month) and iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm (+12.8% per month).
In value terms, h-sections of of non-alloy steel ($131M) remains the largest type of iron angle exported from China, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by u-sections of non-alloy steel ($29M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm, with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of h-sections of of non-alloy steel totaled +15.0%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: u-sections of non-alloy steel (-0.4% per month) and iron or non-alloy steel; l sections, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, of a height of less than 80mm (+12.1% per month).
China Iron Angle Exports by Country
Malaysia (30K tons), Hong Kong SAR (20K tons) and Nigeria (19K tons) were the main destinations of iron angle exports from China, together accounting for 28% of total exports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines, Myanmar, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan and Saudi Arabia, which together accounted for a further 48%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in Japan (with a CAGR of +134.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for iron angle exported from China were the Philippines ($37M), Malaysia ($25M) and Hong Kong SAR ($18M), with a combined 34% share of total exports. Nigeria, Indonesia, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Japan, with a CAGR of +124.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
