Iron Bar Prices in China

China Iron Bar Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the iron bar price amounted to $905 per ton (FOB, China), waning by -10.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.3% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,120 per ton. From August 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($1,118 per ton), while the average price for exports to Myanmar ($616 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mongolia (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

China Iron Bar Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was hot-rolled round bars of stainless steel ($4,038 per ton), while the average price for exports of iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils ($728 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: steel, stainless; bars and rods, hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, other than of circular cross-section (+6.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Iron Bar Exports

In September 2022, overseas shipments of bars and rods of iron or steel (hot-rolled) decreased by -10.3% to 525K tons, falling for the third month in a row after six months of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 61% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 842K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, iron bar exports dropped markedly to $476M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when exports increased by 57% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 870K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China Iron Bar Exports by Type

Hot-rolled bars in bearing steels (175K tons), iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils (145K tons) and steel, alloy; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils (79K tons) were the main products of iron bar exports from China, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils (with a CAGR of +13.1%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the most traded types of bars and rods of iron or steel (hot-rolled) in China were hot-rolled bars in bearing steels ($174M), iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils ($105M) and steel, alloy; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils ($60M), with a combined 92% share of total exports.

Iron or non-alloy steel; bars and rods, hot-rolled, in irregularly wound coils, with a CAGR of +11.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Iron Bar Exports by Country

South Korea (76K tons), Thailand (56K tons) and Indonesia (40K tons) were the main destinations of iron bar exports from China, with a combined 33% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Belgium, Canada, Mongolia, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Germany and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 33%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +52.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($65M), Thailand ($44M) and Vietnam ($36M) constituted the largest markets for iron bar exported from China worldwide, together comprising 31% of total exports. Indonesia, Belgium, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, Peru, Germany, the Netherlands and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Among the main countries of destination, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +50.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
