China Iron Ore Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the iron ore price stood at $112 per ton (CIF, China), declining by -8% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 13% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $138 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Peru ($148 per ton) and South Africa ($132 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($105 per ton) and Australia ($112 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Iron Ore Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was iron ores and concentrates, agglomerated (excluding roasted iron pyrites) ($149 per ton), while the price for iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated stood at $112 per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by iron ore and concentrate, non-agglomerated (+0.0%).
China Iron Ore Imports
In August 2022, after two months of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of iron ores and concentrates, when their volume increased by 28% to 96M tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 100M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, iron ore imports soared to $10.8B (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at 13M tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Iron Ore Imports by Type
In August 2022, iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated (95M tons) was the main type of iron ore supplied to China, with a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by iron ores and concentrates, agglomerated (excluding roasted iron pyrites) (929K tons), with a 1% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated was relatively modest.
In value terms, iron ores and concentrates, non-agglomerated ($10.6B) constituted the largest type of iron ore supplied to China, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by iron ores and concentrates, agglomerated (excluding roasted iron pyrites) ($138M), with a 1.3% share of total imports.
China Iron Ore Imports by Country
In August 2022, Australia (62M tons) constituted the largest supplier of iron ore to China, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, iron ore imports from Australia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (22M tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (4.1M tons), with a 4.3% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Australia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (+0.4% per month) and South Africa (-0.9% per month).
In value terms, Australia ($7B) constituted the largest supplier of iron ore to China, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($2.3B), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Australia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-1.8% per month) and South Africa (-0.4% per month).
