China Lactose Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the lactose price amounted to $1,524 per ton (CIF, China), picking up by 7.1% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($3,790 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,265 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Lactose Imports
In September 2022, supplies from abroad of lactose and lactose syrup decreased by -19% to 10K tons, falling for the second month in a row after two months of growth. Overall, total imports indicated mild growth from January 2022 to September 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -33.6% against July 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 93% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 15K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lactose imports reduced to $16M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.0% against July 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 90% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 22K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Lactose Imports by Country
In September 2022, the United States (8.4K tons) constituted the largest supplier of lactose to China, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, lactose imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (849 tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Australia (385 tons), with a 3.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+11.1% per month) and Australia (+5.5% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($11M) constituted the largest supplier of lactose to China, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($2.7M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 3.6% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+14.1% per month) and Australia (+7.6% per month).

China has extraordinarily increased fructose purchases sixfold, driving out the leading importer, Mexico, from the first to the second place in the global import ranking. Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar remain the key suppliers of fructose to China. Outside these countries, Indonesia saw the highest growth rate in terms of supplies to China.
