China Lamb and Sheep Meat Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the lamb and sheep meat price amounted to $5,365 per ton (CIF, China), waning by -3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 2.2% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $6,422 per ton in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to September 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($5,637 per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($4,615 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
China Lamb and Sheep Meat Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($29.3 per kg), while the price for frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts ($4,935 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by fresh or chilled sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (+1.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports
Lamb and sheep meat imports into China rose remarkably to 29K tons in September 2022, with an increase of 10% compared with August 2022 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 38K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports expanded notably to $158M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 31% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 242K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports by Type
In September 2022, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) (25K tons) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to China, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts (2.5K tons), tenfold. Frozen sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (1.5K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) stood at -2.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts (+2.3% per month) and frozen sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses (-12.7% per month).
In value terms, frozen sheep (including lamb) cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses) ($136M) constituted the largest type of lamb and sheep meat supplied to China, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen sheep (including lamb) boneless cuts ($12M), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen sheep (excluding lamb) carcasses and half-carcasses, with a 4.9% share.
China Lamb and Sheep Meat Imports by Country
New Zealand (16K tons), Australia (13K tons) and Uruguay (413 tons) were the main suppliers of lamb and sheep meat imports to China, together comprising 100% of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in New Zealand (with a CAGR of -2.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, New Zealand ($92M), Australia ($64M) and Uruguay ($1.9M) appeared to be the largest lamb and sheep meat suppliers to China, with a combined 100% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, New Zealand, with a CAGR of -4.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
