U.S. Lead-Acid Accumulator Import Price in June 2022
In June 2022, the average lead-acid accumulator price amounted to $30 per unit, with an increase of 16% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $30 per unit in January 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to June 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($211 per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($14 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Lead-Acid Accumulator Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of lead-acid accumulators (excluding starter batteries) increased by 29% to 4.8M units for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +9.7% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +28.9% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when imports increased by 49% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 5M units in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lead-acid accumulator imports skyrocketed to $139M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +9.1% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +15.5% against July 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 24% m-o-m. Imports peaked in August 2022.
U.S. Lead-Acid Accumulator Imports by Country
In June 2022, Vietnam (2.7M units) constituted the largest lead-acid accumulator supplier to the United States, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, lead-acid accumulator imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (586K units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Malaysia (242K units), with a 5.8% share.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam amounted to +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: China (-2.5% per month) and Malaysia (+4.4% per month).
In value terms, Vietnam ($37M), Mexico ($28M) and China ($17M) constituted the largest lead-acid accumulator suppliers to the United States, with a combined 65% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +21.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
