U.S. Leather Apparel Import Price in July 2022
In July 2022, the average leather apparel price amounted to $97 per unit, picking up by 22% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Italy ($441 per unit), while the price for Thailand ($6.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+13.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Leather Apparel Imports
In 2021, overseas purchases of apparel of leather or of composition leather increased by 37% to 3.6M units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 4.7M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leather apparel imports surged to $251M (IndexBox estimates) in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. Imports peaked at $576M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Leather Apparel Imports by Country
Pakistan (1.4M units), India (753K units) and Italy (589K units) were the main suppliers of leather apparel imports to the United States, with a combined 74% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($61M), India ($60M) and Pakistan ($39M) constituted the largest leather apparel suppliers to the United States, with a combined 64% share of total imports.
India, with a CAGR of +2.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
