Leather Prices in China

China Leather Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the leather price amounted to $8,317 per ton (CIF, China), which is down by -19% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 25% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $12,225 per ton. From March 2022 to September 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($24.3 per kg), while the price for Uzbekistan ($2,057 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

China Leather Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was chamois, patent and combination leather ($18.2 per kg), while the price for sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather ($5,793 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by composition leather (+2.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

China Leather Imports

After two months of decline, overseas purchases of leather increased by 20% to 18K tons in September 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 19K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather imports fell modestly to $149M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 22% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 187K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China Leather Imports by Type

In September 2022, leather of bovine and equine animals (15K tons) constituted the largest type of leather supplied to China, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, leather of bovine and equine animals exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather (2.3K tons), sevenfold. Chamois, patent and combination leather (159 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.9% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of leather of bovine and equine animals was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather (+0.0% per month) and chamois, patent and combination leather (+0.9% per month).

In value terms, leather of bovine and equine animals ($131M) constituted the largest type of leather supplied to China, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather ($13M), with a 9% share of total imports. It was followed by chamois, patent and combination leather, with a 1.9% share.

China Leather Imports by Country

Brazil (7.1K tons), the United States (4K tons) and Thailand (2.3K tons) were the main suppliers of leather imports to China, together comprising 74% of total imports. Uzbekistan, Taiwan (Chinese), Mexico, Vietnam and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +14.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($34M) constituted the largest supplier of leather to China, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($14M), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 7.2% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil totaled -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Thailand (+3.1% per month) and the United States (-7.2% per month).
