U.S. Leather Import Price per Ton in June 2022
In June 2022, the leather price per ton stood at $16.4K (CIF, US), declining by -6.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 15% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $19.3K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to June 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2022, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($28.4K per ton), while the price for Spain ($2.9K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Leather Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the products with the highest prices were leather of bovine and equine animals ($21.1K per ton) and sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather ($16.2K per ton), while the price for chamois, patent and combination leather ($14.5K per ton) and composition leather ($16.1K per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by chamois, patent and combination leather (+1.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Leather Imports
In August 2022, purchases abroad of leather decreased by -29.5% to 2.1K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after two months of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated slight growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports decreased by -39.5% against June 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 55% m-o-m.
In value terms, leather imports reduced to $44M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 35% month-to-month.
U.S. Leather Imports by Type
In August 2022, leather of bovine and equine animals (1.9K tons) constituted the largest type of leather supplied to the United States, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, leather of bovine and equine animals exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather (175 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by composition leather (53 tons), with a 2.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of leather of bovine and equine animals totaled +1.6%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather (+0.5% per month) and composition leather (+3.7% per month).
In value terms, leather of bovine and equine animals ($39M) constituted the largest type of leather supplied to the United States, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by sheep, goat, swine or reptile leather, excluding chamois leather ($2.8M), with a 6.5% share of total imports. It was followed by composition leather, with a 1.9% share.
U.S. Leather Imports by Country
Brazil (964 tons), Italy (897 tons) and Mexico (273 tons) were the main suppliers of leather imports to the United States, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Germany, Spain, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, China and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +98.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest leather suppliers to the United States were Italy ($20M), Brazil ($12M) and Mexico ($7.7M), with a combined 71% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Argentina, China, Spain, the Dominican Republic and the UK, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +31.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
