China Leek Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the leek price amounted to $1,240 per ton (FOB, China), picking up by 18% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 25% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,473 per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to September 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($1,640 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($656 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Leek Exports
In September 2022, approximately 4.2K tons of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were exported from China; rising by 8.6% compared with August 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.9% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, exports increased by +94.6% against February 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when exports increased by 62% against the previous month. The exports peaked in September 2022.
In value terms, leek exports skyrocketed to $5.3M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total exports indicated a notable increase from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.9% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, exports increased by +81.5% against June 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 59% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in September 2022.
China Leek Exports by Country
Japan (2.9K tons) was the main destination for leek exports from China, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, leek exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (494 tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (272 tons), with a 6.4% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Japan amounted to +1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+127.2% per month) and South Korea (+4.8% per month).
In value terms, Japan ($3.8M) remains the key foreign market for leek exports from China, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($608K), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 5.4% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Japan amounted to +2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+96.7% per month) and South Korea (+7.7% per month).
