U.S. Leek Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the leek price per ton amounted to $1.4K (CIF, US), growing by 11% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2.2K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($2.4K per ton), while the price for Mexico stood at $1.2K per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+1.3%).
U.S. Leek Imports
In August 2022, after four months of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, when their volume increased by 13% to 3.4K tons. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 118% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 4.7K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, leek imports skyrocketed to $4.7M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.6% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 69% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $6.7M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Leek Imports by Country
In August 2022, Mexico (2.8K tons) constituted the largest leek supplier to the United States, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, leek imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (505 tons), sixfold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Mexico amounted to +9.2%.
In value terms, Mexico ($3.3M) constituted the largest supplier of leek to the United States, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($1.2M), with a 26% share of total imports.
