China Lettuce And Chicory Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the lettuce and chicory price amounted to $1,424 per ton (FOB, China), with an increase of 19% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, lettuce and chicory export price increased by +22.5% against July 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 63% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,883 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($2,254 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($625 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Lettuce And Chicory Export Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat for the major types of exported product. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce ($1,632 per ton), while the average price for exports of fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce ($1,116 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce (+5.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Lettuce And Chicory Exports
After four months of growth, overseas shipments of lettuce and chicory decreased by -7.3% to 21K tons in September 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when exports increased by 158% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 22K tons in August 2022, and then dropped in the following month.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports amounted to $29M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when exports increased by 321% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in September 2022.
China Lettuce And Chicory Exports by Type
Fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce (12K tons), fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce (8.2K tons) and fresh or chilled chicory, other than witloof chicory (12 tons) were the main products of lettuce and chicory exports from China, together comprising 99.9% of total exports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce ($20M) remains the largest type of lettuce and chicory exported from China, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce ($9.2M), with a 31% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce totaled +31.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce (+19.3% per month) and fresh or chilled chicory, other than witloof chicory (-5.9% per month).
China Lettuce And Chicory Exports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (9.2K tons), Vietnam (5.4K tons) and South Korea (3.1K tons) were the main destinations of lettuce and chicory exports from China, together accounting for 86% of total exports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +35.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($21M) remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from China, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($3.4M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 9.1% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Hong Kong SAR stood at +40.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+28.2% per month) and South Korea (+16.1% per month).
