U.S. Lettuce And Chicory Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the lettuce and chicory price per ton stood at $1.3K (CIF, US), flattening at the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.8% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1.3K per ton in July 2022, and then declined modestly in the following month.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1.5K per ton), while the price for Mexico stood at $1.3K per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+2.1%).
U.S. Lettuce And Chicory Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled witloff chicory ($3.5K per ton), while the price for fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce ($1.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce (+3.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Lettuce And Chicory Imports
In August 2022, after four months of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory, when their volume increased by 14% to 35K tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 with an increase of 30% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 54K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports expanded rapidly to $47M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 28% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $59M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Lettuce And Chicory Imports by Type
In August 2022, fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce (26K tons) constituted the largest type of lettuce and chicory supplied to the United States, with a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce (8.9K tons), threefold. Fresh or chilled chicory, other than witloof chicory (161 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 0.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce totaled -3.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce (-0.8% per month) and fresh or chilled chicory, other than witloof chicory (-13.8% per month).
In value terms, fresh or chilled lettuce, other than cabbage lettuce ($36M) constituted the largest type of lettuce and chicory supplied to the United States, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by fresh or chilled cabbage lettuce ($11M), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by fresh or chilled witloff chicory, with a 1% share.
U.S. Lettuce And Chicory Imports by Country
In August 2022, Mexico (27K tons) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to the United States, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory imports from Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (8.3K tons), threefold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Mexico totaled -6.0%.
In value terms, Mexico ($34M) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to the United States, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Canada ($13M), with a 27% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Mexico amounted to -4.1%.
