U.S. Locomotive, Train And Train Car Export Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the average export price for locomotives, train and train cars amounted to $44 per unit, picking up by 46% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $47 per unit in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Australia ($190 per unit), while the average price for exports to China ($22 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+35.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2022, the amount of locomotives, train and train cars exported from the United States soared to 7.2M units, jumping by 19% against the previous month's figure. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +5.7% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 31% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in August 2022.
In value terms, locomotive, train and train car exports skyrocketed to $315M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.7% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports decreased by -2.1% against June 2022 indices. The exports peaked at 322M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Canada (66M units), Mexico (52M units) and Australia (2.8M units) were the main destinations of locomotive, train and train car exports from the United States, together accounting for 84% of total exports.
From 2013 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Canada, while exports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest markets for locomotive, train and train car exported from the United States were Canada ($863M), Mexico ($529M) and Australia ($51M), with a combined 68% share of total exports.
