Magnesium Prices in China

China Magnesium Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the magnesium price stood at $4,032 per ton (FOB, China), shrinking by -12.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 an increase of 3.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $6,885 per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to September 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In September 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to the United States ($5,102 per ton) and Mexico ($4,765 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($3,573 per ton) and Thailand ($3,576 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (-3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

China Magnesium Exports

In September 2022, overseas shipments of magnesium decreased by -14.5% to 28K tons, falling for the third consecutive month after two months of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when exports increased by 29% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 44K tons. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium exports fell notably to $112M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 30% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $301M. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

China Magnesium Exports by Country

The Netherlands (6.2K tons) was the main destination for magnesium exports from China, accounting for a 22% share of total exports. Moreover, magnesium exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (3K tons), twofold. Japan (2.3K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.4% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Canada (-4.2% per month) and Japan (+3.7% per month).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($24M), Canada ($12M) and India ($10M) constituted the largest markets for magnesium exported from China worldwide, together comprising 42% of total exports. Japan, South Korea, Turkey, the Czech Republic, the United States, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Romania, Mexico and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Turkey, with a CAGR of +10.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
