China Manganese Ore and Concentrate Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the manganese ore and concentrate price stood at $212 per ton, therefore (CIF, China), remained relatively stable against the previous month. Over the last eight-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $224 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Gabon ($291 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($90.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gabon (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Manganese Ore and Concentrate Imports
In September 2022, approximately 3.1M tons of manganese ores and concentrates were imported into China; jumping by 30% compared with August 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% from January 2022 to September 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, manganese ore and concentrate imports skyrocketed to $662M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, total imports indicated a notable expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.3% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports increased by +92.1% against February 2022 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
China Manganese Ore and Concentrate Imports by Country
In September 2022, South Africa (1.5M tons) constituted the largest supplier of manganese ore and concentrate to China, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, manganese ore and concentrate imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Gabon (588K tons), threefold. Australia (422K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from South Africa amounted to +1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Gabon (+5.0% per month) and Australia (+2.1% per month).
In value terms, the largest manganese ore and concentrate suppliers to China were South Africa ($293M), Gabon ($171M) and Australia ($105M), with a combined 86% share of total imports. Ghana, Brazil, Myanmar and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.8%.
Among the main suppliers, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +57.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
