U.S. Mate Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the mate price per ton stood at $4.3K (CIF, US), rising by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 when the average import price increased by 17% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $4.3K per ton in January 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($8.2K per ton), while the price for Argentina ($3.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Mate Imports
For the third month in a row, the United States recorded growth in supplies from abroad of mate, which increased by 34% to 244 tons in August 2022. In general, imports posted a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 164% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in August 2022.
In value terms, mate imports surged to $1M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 198% m-o-m. Imports peaked in August 2022.
U.S. Mate Imports by Country
In August 2022, Brazil (188 tons) constituted the largest mate supplier to the United States, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, mate imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (30 tons), sixfold. Paraguay (15 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.2% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to +2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (-0.1% per month) and Paraguay (+45.7% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($838K) constituted the largest supplier of mate to the United States, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($93K), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a 5.3% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (-3.0% per month) and Paraguay (+28.7% per month).
