China MDF Export Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the mdf price stood at $463 per cubic meter (FOB, China), dropping by -4.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 an increase of 21% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $534 per cubic meter in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($888 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($280 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
China MDF Export Prices by Type
Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm ($522 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports of medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm ($441 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm (+0.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.
China MDF Exports
In August 2022, shipments abroad of MDF decreased by -14.8% to 165K cubic meters, falling for the third month in a row after two months of growth. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when exports increased by 32% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 255K cubic meters. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, MDF exports contracted notably to $77M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when exports increased by 21% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 120M cubic meters in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China MDF Exports by Type
Medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm (113K cubic meters) was the largest type of MDF exported from China, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm exceeded the volume of the second product type, medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm (32K cubic meters), threefold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm stood at -3.7%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm (-4.9% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness not exceeding 5 mm (-6.9% per month).
In value terms, medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm ($50M) remains the largest type of MDF exported from China, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm ($17M), with a 22% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 9 mm amounted to -2.9%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness exceeding 5 mm but not exceeding 9 mm (-5.0% per month) and medium density fibreboard (MDF), of a thickness not exceeding 5 mm (-9.2% per month).
China MDF Exports by Country
Mexico (23K cubic meters), Saudi Arabia (17K cubic meters) and the United Arab Emirates (14K cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from China, together comprising 33% of total exports. The United States, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Algeria, Canada, Russia, Egypt, Iraq, Australia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in Algeria (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for MDF exported from China were the United States ($9.8M), Mexico ($7.7M) and Saudi Arabia ($5.2M), with a combined 30% share of total exports. Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Vietnam, Russia, Japan, Australia, Egypt, Algeria and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +13.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
