China Meat And Poultry Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the meat and poultry price amounted to $4,858 per ton (CIF, China), waning by -3.5% against the previous month. Over the last eight-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 8.9% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $5,074 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($6,908 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($2,250 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Meat And Poultry Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was beef (cattle meat) ($6,787 per ton), while the price for pork ($2,363 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by chicken meat (+4.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Meat And Poultry Imports
In September 2022, after four months of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of meat and poultry, when their volume decreased by -2% to 541K tons. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1% from January 2022 to September 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 19% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 552K tons in August 2022, and then dropped slightly in the following month.
In value terms, meat and poultry imports shrank to $2.6B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.7% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.5% against August 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 23% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 2.8M tons in August 2022, and then contracted in the following month.
China Meat And Poultry Imports by Type
Beef (cattle meat) (248K tons), pork (152K tons) and chicken meat (110K tons) were the main products of meat and poultry imports to China, together comprising 94% of total imports. These products were followed by lamb and sheep meat, turkey meat, meat of camels and other animals, horse, mule and donkey meat and goat meat, which together accounted for a further 5.8%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in beef (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, beef (cattle meat) ($1.7B) constituted the largest type of meat and poultry supplied to China, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by chicken meat ($421M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by pork, with a 14% share.
China Meat And Poultry Imports by Country
In September 2022, Brazil (190K tons) constituted the largest supplier of meat and poultry to China, accounting for a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, meat and poultry imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (56K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Argentina (54K tons), with a 9.9% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Brazil amounted to +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (+0.3% per month) and Argentina (+2.5% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($1B) constituted the largest supplier of meat and poultry to China, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($318M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Brazil totaled +17.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (+3.7% per month) and Argentina (+3.4% per month).
