China Meat Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the meat price stood at $5,125 per ton (CIF, China), declining by -4.3% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 8.5% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $5,564 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Australia ($6,908 per ton), while the price for Spain ($2,471 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Meat Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was beef (cattle meat) ($6,787 per ton), while the price for pork ($2,363 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by goat meat (+2.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Meat Imports
After two months of growth, supplies from abroad of meat decreased by -2.1% to 429K tons in September 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the period from January 2022 to September 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 21% m-o-m. Imports peaked at 439K tons in August 2022, and then fell modestly in the following month.
In value terms, meat imports dropped to $2.2B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from January 2022 to September 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.8% over the last eight months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, imports decreased by -6.3% against August 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 25% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 2.3M tons in August 2022, and then fell in the following month.
China Meat Imports by Type
Beef (cattle meat) (248K tons), pork (152K tons) and lamb and sheep meat (29K tons) were the main products of meat imports to China, with a combined 100% share of total imports. Meat of camels and other animals, horse, mule and donkey meat and goat meat lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 0.1%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in beef (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, beef (cattle meat) ($1.7B) constituted the largest type of meat supplied to China, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by pork ($359M), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by lamb and sheep meat, with a 7.2% share.
China Meat Imports by Country
In September 2022, Brazil (149K tons) constituted the largest meat supplier to China, accounting for a 35% share of total imports. Moreover, meat imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (46K tons), threefold. Spain (42K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil totaled +17.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (+3.1% per month) and Spain (-1.6% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($877M) constituted the largest supplier of meat to China, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($255M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand, with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil totaled +24.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Argentina (+3.5% per month) and New Zealand (-0.9% per month).
