China Mechanical Wood Pulp Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the mechanical wood pulp price stood at $735 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -33.9% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from January 2022 to September 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% over the last eight-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2022 figures, mechanical wood pulp import price decreased by -33.9% against August 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 an increase of 46% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,112 per ton in August 2022, and then dropped dramatically in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,631 per ton), while the price for Norway ($577 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Mechanical Wood Pulp Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of mechanical wood pulp increased by 141% to 609 tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 242% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 887 tons. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mechanical wood pulp imports surged to $448K (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 343% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $655K. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
China Mechanical Wood Pulp Imports by Country
In September 2022, Norway (502 tons) constituted the largest mechanical wood pulp supplier to China, accounting for a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, mechanical wood pulp imports from Norway exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (91 tons), sixfold.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Norway was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-7.5% per month) and Germany (-20.6% per month).
In value terms, Norway ($289K), the United States ($148K) and Germany ($10K) were the largest mechanical wood pulp suppliers to China.
Norway, with a CAGR of 0.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
