China Melon Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the melon price stood at $1,328 per ton (FOB, China), surging by 7.2% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 29% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,462 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($1,699 per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($935 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Melon Exports
In September 2022, after five months of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of melons, when their volume decreased by -12% to 18K tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 289% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 20K tons in August 2022, and then declined in the following month.
In value terms, melon exports contracted to $24M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 with an increase of 323% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 25K tons in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
China Melon Exports by Country
Vietnam (10K tons) was the main destination for melon exports from China, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, melon exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (4.3K tons), twofold. Thailand (1K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam totaled +37.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+105.6% per month) and Thailand (+28.1% per month).
In value terms, the largest markets for melon exported from China were Vietnam ($14M), Hong Kong SAR ($7.3M) and Thailand ($969K), with a combined 92% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +113.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
