Motor Vehicle Body Prices in the United States

U.S. Motor Vehicle Body Export Price in August 2022

In August 2022, the motor vehicle body price stood at $34 per unit (FOB, US), rising by 2.8% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a moderate expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, motor vehicle body export price increased by +13.3% against June 2022 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $50.9K per thousand units. From May 2022 to August 2022, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($1K per unit), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($3.2 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+46.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Body Exports

Motor vehicle body exports from the United States expanded markedly to 3M units in August 2022, surging by 9.2% on the previous month. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 34% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 3.2M units in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to August 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motor vehicle body exports rose notably to $104M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.0% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when exports increased by 26% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $112M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

U.S. Motor Vehicle Body Exports by Country

Mexico (2.2M units) was the main destination for motor vehicle body exports from the United States, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, motor vehicle body exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (517K units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (53K units), with a 1.7% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico stood at -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Thailand (+55.1% per month) and South Africa (-6.3% per month).

In value terms, Canada ($54M) remains the key foreign market for motor vehicle body exports from the United States, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($22M), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 1.7% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Canada totaled +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+6.0% per month) and Thailand (+2.6% per month).
