China Newsprint Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the newsprint price amounted to $638 per ton (CIF, China), shrinking by -4.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when the average import price increased by 4.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $704 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Russia ($641 per ton), while the price for South Korea amounted to $613 per ton.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Newsprint Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of newsprint increased by 19% to 46K tons, rising for the second month in a row after two months of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 44% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 53K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, newsprint imports rose significantly to $29M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 51% against the previous month. Imports peaked at 37K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Newsprint Imports by Country
In September 2022, Russia (43K tons) was the main supplier of newsprint to China, accounting for a 95% share of total imports. Moreover, newsprint imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (2.1K tons), more than tenfold.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Russia stood at +3.6%.
In value terms, Russia ($28M) constituted the largest supplier of newsprint to China, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($1.3M), with a 4.4% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Russia stood at +3.6%.
