U.S. Olive Oil Import Price in December 2021
In December 2021, the olive oil price stood at $4,800 per ton (CIF, US), rising by 11% against the previous month. Over the last eleven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Chile ($5,324 per ton) and Italy ($5,000 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($3,661 per ton) and Tunisia ($3,863 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Olive Oil Imports
In December 2021, the amount of olive oil and its fractions imported into the United States reduced to 19K tons, which is down by -11.4% on November 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 30K tons. From May 2021 to December 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, olive oil imports shrank slightly to $93M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2021. Overall, imports saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2021 when imports increased by 39% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $117M. From May 2021 to December 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Olive Oil Imports by Country
Italy (7K tons), Spain (5.7K tons) and Tunisia (1.9K tons) were the main suppliers of olive oil imports to the United States, together comprising 75% of total imports. Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Greece and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest olive oil suppliers to the United States were Italy ($35M), Spain ($25M) and Tunisia ($7.2M), together comprising 72% of total imports. Argentina, Chile, Portugal, Greece and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Argentina, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
