China Packaging Materials Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the packaging materials price stood at $633 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -10.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 an increase of 2.7% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $719 per ton. From April 2022 to September 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($1,179 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($401 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Packaging Materials Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was folding boxboard ($1,456 per ton), while the price for other papers packaging ($468 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by folding boxboard (+0.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Packaging Materials Imports
In September 2022, the amount of packaging materials imported into China was estimated at 635K tons, growing by 4.5% on the previous month's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 20% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 647K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, packaging materials imports dropped to $402M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 23% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 455K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Packaging Materials Imports by Type
In September 2022, paperboard case materials (504K tons) constituted the largest type of packaging materials supplied to China, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, paperboard case materials exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (46K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by other papers packaging (42K tons), with a 6.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of paperboard case materials totaled +1.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard (+0.6% per month) and other papers packaging (+0.6% per month).
In value terms, paperboard case materials ($274M) constituted the largest type of packaging materials supplied to China, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by folding boxboard ($61M), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, with a 12% share.
China Packaging Materials Imports by Country
Russia (109K tons), Vietnam (66K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (65K tons) were the main suppliers of packaging materials imports to China, together comprising 38% of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest packaging materials suppliers to China were Russia ($70M), Japan ($36M) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($35M), together accounting for 35% of total imports.
Russia, with a CAGR of +13.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
