U.S. Palm Oil Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the palm oil price per ton stood at $1.5K (CIF, US), waning by -4.4% against the previous month. Over the last seven months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 an increase of 8.9% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1.6K per ton. From July 2022 to August 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Malaysia ($1.8K per ton) and Indonesia ($1.5K per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($1.3K per ton) and Colombia ($1.4K per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Palm Oil Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was refined palm oil ($1.6K per ton), while the price for crude palm oil amounted to $1.2K per ton.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by refined palm oil (+3.0%).
U.S. Palm Oil Imports
In August 2022, supplies from abroad of palm oil increased by 141% to 139K tons for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight curtailment.
In value terms, palm oil imports surged to $213M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, imports saw a mild expansion.
U.S. Palm Oil Imports by Type
In August 2022, refined palm oil (127K tons) was the main type of palm oil supplied to the United States, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, refined palm oil exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, crude palm oil (12K tons), more than tenfold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of refined palm oil stood at -2.9%.
In value terms, refined palm oil ($199M) constituted the largest type of palm oil supplied to the United States, comprising 93% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by crude palm oil ($14M), with a 6.8% share of total imports.
U.S. Palm Oil Imports by Country
In August 2022, Indonesia (94K tons) constituted the largest palm oil supplier to the United States, with a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, palm oil imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (30K tons), threefold. Ecuador (9.3K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.7% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to -4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+6.1% per month) and Ecuador (+67.1% per month).
In value terms, Indonesia ($139M) constituted the largest supplier of palm oil to the United States, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($54M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Ecuador, with a 5.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia amounted to -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+10.7% per month) and Ecuador (+51.8% per month).
