U.S. Paperboard Export Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the paperboard price per ton amounted to $927.4 (FOB, US), approximately equating the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 3.5% m-o-m. The export price peaked in August 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In August 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices to Japan ($1.1K per ton) and South Korea ($1.0K per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($744.0 per ton) and India ($758.0 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Paperboard Exports
In August 2022, after two months of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of paperboard, when their volume increased by 3% to 613K tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 22% m-o-m. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 688K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paperboard exports expanded to $568M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, exports showed a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 23% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $621M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Paperboard Exports by Country
Canada (132K tons), Mexico (131K tons) and China (54K tons) were the main destinations of paperboard exports from the United States, together comprising 52% of total exports. Guatemala, Costa Rica, Italy, Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras, Japan, South Korea, Chile and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in Colombia (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for paperboard exported from the United States were Canada ($135M), Mexico ($120M) and China ($43M), with a combined 52% share of total exports. Guatemala, Costa Rica, Italy, Ecuador, Japan, Colombia, Honduras, South Korea, Chile and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Colombia, with a CAGR of +11.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
