China Phenols Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the phenols price stood at $1,978 per ton (CIF, China), waning by -12.5% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 20% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,890 per ton. From August 2022 to September 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($2,864 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($1,239 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Phenols Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was phenols or phenol-alcohols; halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives thereof ($6,232 per ton), while the price for 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts ($1,458 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by phenols or phenol-alcohols; halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives thereof (+3.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Phenols Imports
In September 2022, approximately 77K tons of phenols were imported into China; with a decrease of -18.4% compared with the previous month's figure. In general, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 24% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 112K tons. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, phenols imports fell sharply to $152M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 44% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $303M. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
China Phenols Imports by Type
4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts (38K tons), monophenols (30K tons) and phenols or phenol-alcohols; halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives thereof (6.6K tons) were the main products of phenols imports to China, with a combined 97% share of total imports. Polyphenols and phenol-alcohols lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 3.3%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in polyphenols and phenol-alcohols (with a CAGR of +0.4%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts ($55M), monophenols ($44M) and phenols or phenol-alcohols; halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives thereof ($41M) appeared to be the most imported types of phenols in China, together accounting for 92% of total imports.
China Phenols Imports by Country
Thailand (19K tons), South Korea (17K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (15K tons) were the main suppliers of phenols imports to China, with a combined 66% share of total imports.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest phenols suppliers to China were South Korea ($24M), Thailand ($24M) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($22M), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
