U.S. Plastic Packaging Import Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the plastic packaging price per ton stood at $5.0K (CIF, US), remaining constant against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when the average import price increased by 1.2% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $5.0K per ton in January 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to July 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from South Korea ($6.6K per ton) and Israel ($6.4K per ton), while the price for China ($5.0K per ton) and India ($5.2K per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Israel (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Plastic Packaging Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was plastic sacks and bags ($5.6K per ton), while the price for plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles ($4.2K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by plastic bottle (+0.4%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.
U.S. Plastic Packaging Imports
For the third month in a row, the United States recorded decline in overseas purchases of plastic packaging, which decreased by -0.5% to 110K tons in August 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 22% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 121K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plastic packaging imports reached $550M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 22% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of $596M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Plastic Packaging Imports by Type
Plastic sacks and bags (57K tons), plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles (31K tons) and carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics (22K tons) were the main products of plastic packaging imports to the United States, together comprising 99.9% of total imports. These products were followed by carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics, which accounted for a further 0%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in plastic box (with a CAGR of +1.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, plastic sacks and bags ($314M) constituted the largest type of plastic packaging supplied to the United States, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by plastic boxes, cases, crates and similar packing articles ($128M), with a 23% share of total imports.
U.S. Plastic Packaging Imports by Country
China (15K tons), Canada (10K tons) and Mexico (6.2K tons) were the main suppliers of plastic packaging imports to the United States, with a combined 29% share of total imports. Thailand, Vietnam, India, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia and Israel lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest plastic packaging suppliers to the United States were China ($76M), Canada ($58M) and Mexico ($36M), together accounting for 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, India, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia and Israel, which together accounted for a further 18%.
Among the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
