U.S. Plywood Import Price in July 2022
The average plywood price stood at $646 per cubic meter in July 2022, dropping by -9% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 3.7% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $715.2K per thousand cubic meters. From June 2022 to July 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($1,290 per cubic meter), while the price for Brazil ($399 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Plywood Imports
After four months of decline, supplies from abroad of plywood increased by 2.6% to 474K cubic meters in August 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 20% m-o-m. As a result, imports reached the peak of 639K cubic meters. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, plywood imports expanded modestly to $312M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 21% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $431M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Plywood Imports by Country
Brazil (121K cubic meters), Indonesia (79K cubic meters) and Vietnam (63K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of plywood imports to the United States, with a combined 57% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, Chile, China, Russia, Cambodia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 37%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Chile (with a CAGR of +17.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest plywood suppliers to the United States were Indonesia ($57M), Brazil ($48M) and Vietnam ($45M), together accounting for 50% of total imports. Canada, Chile, China, Cambodia, Russia, Ecuador, Malaysia and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
Among the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +20.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
