China Pork Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the pork price stood at $2,363 per ton (CIF, China), with an increase of 4.7% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 7.5% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in September 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Chile ($2,591 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,704 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Pork Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($10.6 per kg), while the price for frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($2,194 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by fresh pork other than cuts or carcases (+3.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Pork Imports
In September 2022, purchases abroad of pork increased by 9.7% to 152K tons, rising for the second month in a row after three months of decline. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 when imports increased by 14% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in September 2022.
In value terms, pork imports rose sharply to $359M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the period from January 2022 to September 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 22% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in September 2022.
China Pork Imports by Type
In September 2022, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases (112K tons) constituted the largest type of pork supplied to China, accounting for a 74% share of total imports. Moreover, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (40K tons), threefold.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases was relatively modest. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat (-0.1% per month) and fresh or chilled pig meat other than cuts or carcases (+6.4% per month).
In value terms, frozen pig meat other than cuts or carcases ($271M) constituted the largest type of pork supplied to China, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat ($87M), with a 24% share of total imports.
China Pork Imports by Country
Spain (42K tons), Brazil (37K tons) and Denmark (17K tons) were the main suppliers of pork imports to China, together comprising 63% of total imports. These countries were followed by the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, the UK, Chile, France and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 34%.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in the United States (with a CAGR of +3.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($103M), Brazil ($95M) and Denmark ($44M) constituted the largest pork suppliers to China, with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the United States, Chile, the UK, Canada, France and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 30%.
Among the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +8.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
