U.S. Potato Chips Export Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the potato chips price per ton stood at $3.3K (FOB, US), approximately mirroring the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 3% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $3.4K per ton in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to August 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($5.5K per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($2.0K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Potato Chips Exports
In August 2022, potato chips exports from the United States amounted to 9.7K tons, growing by 3% compared with July 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +8.3% over the last seven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports increased by +75.2% against January 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 28% m-o-m. The exports peaked in August 2022.
In value terms, potato chips exports expanded slightly to $32M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total exports indicated resilient growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +8.6% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports increased by +77.8% against January 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 27% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in August 2022.
U.S. Potato Chips Exports by Country
Canada (5.1K tons) was the main destination for potato chips exports from the United States, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, potato chips exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (1.5K tons), fourfold. The United Arab Emirates (526 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Canada stood at +10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+3.6% per month) and the United Arab Emirates (+25.1% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($16M) remains the key foreign market for potato chips exports from the United States, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($3.4M), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with an 8.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to Canada amounted to +9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (+3.7% per month) and the United Arab Emirates (+22.0% per month).
