U.S. Poultry Export Price per Ton in July 2022
In July 2022, the poultry price per ton stood at $1.5K (FOB, US), flattening at the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to July 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1.6K per ton, and then declined slightly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($3.7K per ton), while the average price for exports to Congo ($1.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Poultry Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was duck and goose meat ($4.3K per ton), while the average price for exports of chicken meat ($1.5K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: duck and goose meat (+5.8%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Poultry Exports
In August 2022, overseas shipments of poultry were finally on the rise to reach 320K tons for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a two-month declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when exports increased by 14% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 352K tons. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, poultry exports rose notably to $491M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% over the period from January 2022 to August 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 12% month-to-month.
U.S. Poultry Exports by Type
Chicken meat (308K tons) was the largest type of poultry exported from the United States, accounting for a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exceeded the volume of the second product type, turkey meat (11K tons), more than tenfold.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of chicken meat totaled +1.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: turkey meat (-1.6% per month) and duck and goose meat (+6.1% per month).
In value terms, chicken meat ($453M) remains the largest type of poultry exported from the United States, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by turkey meat ($36M), with a 7.3% share of total exports.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of chicken meat stood at +3.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: turkey meat (-1.2% per month) and duck and goose meat (+12.2% per month).
U.S. Poultry Exports by Country
Mexico (55K tons), China (51K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (21K tons) were the main destinations of poultry exports from the United States, with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Cuba, the Philippines, Canada, Angola, Vietnam, Guatemala, Haiti, Congo, Colombia and Ghana, which together accounted for a further 35%.
From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +18.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($90M), Mexico ($86M) and Canada ($44M) constituted the largest markets for poultry exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising 47% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese), Cuba, the Philippines, Guatemala, Angola, Vietnam, Haiti, Colombia, Congo and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
