U.S. Preserved Sardines Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the preserved sardines price per ton stood at $5.0K (CIF, US), declining by -7.5% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 18% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $5.4K per ton in July 2022, and then reduced in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Canada ($8.5K per ton), while the price for China ($1.3K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Preserved Sardines Imports
In August 2022, purchases abroad of sardines (prepared or preserved) increased by 2.7% to 3.3K tons, rising for the third month in a row after two months of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 38% month-to-month.
In value terms, preserved sardines imports contracted modestly to $17M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2022 when imports increased by 58% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $19M. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
U.S. Preserved Sardines Imports by Country
Morocco (1.2K tons), Poland (624 tons) and Ecuador (394 tons) were the main suppliers of preserved sardines imports to the United States, together comprising 67% of total imports. Thailand, Vietnam, China, Canada, Spain, Latvia and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Morocco ($7.1M) constituted the largest supplier of preserved sardines to the United States, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($3.3M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Morocco was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Poland (-1.5% per month) and Vietnam (+1.9% per month).
