China Primary Fiber Crops Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the primary fiber crops price amounted to $3,018 per ton (CIF, China), with an increase of 19% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to September 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 20% month-to-month. The import price peaked in September 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($4,245 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($810 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Primary Fiber Crops Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was flax fiber ($3,770 per ton), while the price for jute and jute-like fibers ($810 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre (+3.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Primary Fiber Crops Imports
In September 2022, the amount of fiber crops (primary) imported into China contracted sharply to 101K tons, waning by -31.1% on the month before. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when imports increased by 14% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 291K tons. From April 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, primary fiber crops imports shrank sharply to $304M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 15% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 627K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Primary Fiber Crops Imports by Type
In September 2022, cotton lint (89K tons) constituted the largest type of primary fiber crops supplied to China, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, cotton lint exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, flax fiber (9.9K tons), ninefold. Jute and jute-like fibers (2.2K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.2% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of cotton lint amounted to -11.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: flax fiber (-2.0% per month) and jute and jute-like fibers (+6.6% per month).
In value terms, cotton lint ($265M) constituted the largest type of primary fiber crops supplied to China, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by flax fiber ($37M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by jute and jute-like fibers, with a 0.6% share.
China Primary Fiber Crops Imports by Country
In September 2022, the United States (68K tons) constituted the largest supplier of primary fiber crops to China, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, primary fiber crops imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (11K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (5.7K tons), with a 5.7% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the United States was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-25.8% per month) and France (-6.6% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($205M) constituted the largest supplier of primary fiber crops to China, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($35M), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from the United States totaled +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-23.4% per month) and France (-5.5% per month).
