U.S. Primary Fiber Crops Export Price per Ton in June 2022
In June 2022, the primary fiber crops price per ton amounted to $2.8K (FOB, US), increasing by 1.5% against the previous month. Over the last five months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when the average export price increased by 5.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in June 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In June 2022, the countries with the highest prices were India ($3.3K per ton) and Bangladesh ($2.9K per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2.6K per ton) and Indonesia ($2.6K per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Primary Fiber Crops Export Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was flax, raw or retted ($27.1K per ton), while the average price for exports of jute and jute-like fibers ($536.9 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: flax, tow and waste (+2,775.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Primary Fiber Crops Exports
For the third consecutive month, the United States recorded decline in overseas shipments of fiber crops (primary), which decreased by -12.2% to 269K tons in August 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 19% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 424K tons. From April 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, primary fiber crops exports dropped to $736M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 21% against the previous month.
U.S. Primary Fiber Crops Exports by Type
Cotton lint (269K tons) was the largest type of primary fiber crops exported from the United States, with a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by jute and jute-like fibers (139 tons), with a 0.1% share of total exports. The third position in this ranking was taken by hemp tow (72 tons), with less than 0.1% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of cotton lint amounted to -1.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: jute and jute-like fibers (+15.1% per month) and hemp tow (+47.1% per month).
In value terms, cotton lint ($736M) remains the largest type of primary fiber crops exported from the United States, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by hemp tow ($243K), with less than 0.1% share of total exports. It was followed by flax fiber, with less than 0.1% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of cotton lint was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: hemp tow (+18.9% per month) and flax fiber (+30.8% per month).
U.S. Primary Fiber Crops Exports by Country
China (106K tons), Turkey (59K tons) and Vietnam (49K tons) were the main destinations of primary fiber crops exports from the United States, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Mexico and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.
From January 2022 to June 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for primary fiber crops exported from the United States were China ($277M), Turkey ($151M) and Vietnam ($139M), together accounting for 55% of total exports. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +35.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
