U.S. Printing and Writing Paper Import Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the printing and writing paper price per ton stood at $1.2K (CIF, US), with an increase of 4.3% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 4.5% month-to-month. The import price peaked in August 2022.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($1.9K per ton), while the price for Canada ($1.0K per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Printing and Writing Paper Import Prices by Type
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was coated printing and writing papers ($1.3K per ton), while the price for uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers ($891.1 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by coated printing and writing paper (+3.1%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Printing and Writing Paper Imports
For the fourth consecutive month, the United States recorded growth in supplies from abroad of printing and writing paper, which increased by 9.4% to 388K tons in August 2022. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.6% from January 2022 to August 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 12% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in August 2022.
In value terms, printing and writing paper imports totaled $458M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +7.3% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.1% against February 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when imports increased by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in August 2022.
U.S. Printing and Writing Paper Imports by Type
Coated printing and writing papers (168K tons), uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers (114K tons) and uncoated wood free printing and writing papers (105K tons) were the main products of printing and writing paper imports to the United States.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by uncoated wood free printing and writing paper (with a CAGR of +5.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, coated printing and writing papers ($223M), uncoated wood free printing and writing papers ($133M) and uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers ($102M) constituted the most imported types of printing and writing paper in the United States.
U.S. Printing and Writing Paper Imports by Country
In August 2022, Canada (167K tons) constituted the largest printing and writing paper supplier to the United States, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, printing and writing paper imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (57K tons), threefold. South Korea (28K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.2% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada amounted to +2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+11.2% per month) and South Korea (+1.6% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($168M) constituted the largest supplier of printing and writing paper to the United States, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($64M), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.6% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Canada amounted to +4.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Finland (+14.2% per month) and Germany (+8.3% per month).
