China Pulses Import Prices by Type
The import price in China stood at $680 per ton in August 2022, picking up by 3.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 an increase of 3.9% month-to-month. China import price peaked at $763 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was pulses, nes ($1,013 per ton), while the price for peas (dry) ($604 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by dry peas (+3.8%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Pulses Imports
In December 2022, after three months of decline, there was decline in supplies from abroad of pulses, when their volume decreased by 0% to less than 0.1 kg. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 154% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 326K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pulses imports amounted to less than $0.1 (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 143% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 234K tons in April 2022; however, from May 2022 to December 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
China Pulses Imports by Type
In August 2022, peas (dry) (172K tons) represented the key type of pulses, comprising 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by beans (dry) (41K tons), mixing up a 19% share of total imports.
Peas (dry) was also the fastest-growing in terms of imports, with a CAGR of +14.2% from January 2022 to August 2022. Beans (dry) (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of peas (dry) (+37 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from January 2022-August 2022, the share of beans (dry) (-30.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, peas (dry) ($104M) constitutes the largest type of pulses imported into China, comprising 71% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by beans (dry) ($40M), with a 27% share of global imports. It was followed by pulses, nes, with a 1.4% share.
China Pulses Imports by Country
In 2021, Canada (2.1M tons) constituted the largest supplier of pulses to China, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, pulses imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uzbekistan (105K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (104K tons), with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +13.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+97.2% per year) and Australia (+33.7% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($726M) constituted the largest supplier of pulses to China, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Uzbekistan ($90M), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada amounted to +11.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uzbekistan (+123.4% per year) and Myanmar (+11.5% per year).
