China Rapeseed Oil Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the rapeseed oil price stood at $1,688 per ton (CIF, China), waning by -4.2% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 an increase of 12% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,763 per ton in July 2022, and then fell modestly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($3,079 per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($1,439 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+159.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Rapeseed Oil Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($13.8 per kg), while the price for vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($1,677 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (+9.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Rapeseed Oil Imports
For the third month in a row, China recorded decline in supplies from abroad of rapeseed oil, which decreased by -19.8% to 54K tons in August 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 when imports increased by 61% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at 122K tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rapeseed oil imports declined notably to $91M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 69% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $202M. From June 2022 to August 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
China Rapeseed Oil Imports by Type
In August 2022, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (53K tons) was the main type of rapeseed oil supplied to China, with a 99% share of total imports. It was followed by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (603 tons), with a 1.1% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was taken by vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (3.1 tons), with less than 0.1% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude totaled -10.8%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (-21.0% per month) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (-21.4% per month).
In value terms, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($90M) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to China, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($1.6M), with a 1.8% share of total imports. It was followed by vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude, with less than 0.1% share.
China Rapeseed Oil Imports by Country
In August 2022, Russia (39K tons) constituted the largest rapeseed oil supplier to China, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, rapeseed oil imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (11K tons), fourfold. Belarus (2.5K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.7% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Russia was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-14.0% per month) and Belarus (-40.6% per month).
In value terms, Russia ($64M) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to China, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($20M), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.3% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Russia totaled +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-8.6% per month) and Belarus (-41.6% per month).
