China Raw Silk Export Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the raw silk price amounted to $61.2 per kg (FOB, China), reducing by -2.2% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a slight shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2022 an increase of 6.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $67.3 per kg in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to September 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In September 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($68.4 per kg) and Italy ($68.2 per kg), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($57.8 per kg) and Bangladesh ($58.7 per kg) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Raw Silk Exports
After three months of decline, overseas shipments of raw silk increased by 18% to 382 tons in September 2022. In general, exports enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 85% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 666 tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, raw silk exports stood at $23M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 83% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 41K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
China Raw Silk Exports by Country
India (230 tons) was the main destination for raw silk exports from China, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, raw silk exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (51 tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Romania (47 tons), with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to India totaled +18.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-0.1% per month) and Romania (-2.4% per month).
In value terms, India ($14M) emerged as the key foreign market for raw silk exports from China, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Romania ($3.2M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 13% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to India totaled +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Romania (-2.1% per month) and Vietnam (-1.6% per month).
