China Raw Steel And Steel Semi-Finished Products Import Price in September 2022
In September 2022, the raw steel and steel semi-finished products price stood at $826 per ton (CIF, China), falling by -23.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 when the average import price increased by 29% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,439 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($6,801 per ton), while the price for Oman ($494 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+32.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Raw Steel And Steel Semi-Finished Products Import Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was iron and non-alloy steel in ingots ($12.3 per kg), while the price for iron or non-alloy steel; semi-finished products thereof ($524 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by alloy steel in ingots or other primary forms, semi-finished products of other alloy steel (+8.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Raw Steel And Steel Semi-Finished Products Imports
In September 2022, approximately 675K tons of raw steel and steel semi-finished products were imported into China; picking up by 56% against August 2022 figures. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Imports peaked at 1M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products soared to $558M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2022 with an increase of 33% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at 1M tons in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to September 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
China Raw Steel And Steel Semi-Finished Products Imports by Type
In September 2022, iron or non-alloy steel; semi-finished products thereof (561K tons) constituted the largest type of raw steel and steel semi-finished products supplied to China, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, iron or non-alloy steel; semi-finished products thereof exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, stainless steel in ingots or other primary forms; semi-finished products of stainless steel (111K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by alloy steel in ingots or other primary forms, semi-finished products of other alloy steel (2.9K tons), with a 0.4% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of iron or non-alloy steel; semi-finished products thereof stood at -4.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: stainless steel in ingots or other primary forms; semi-finished products of stainless steel (-7.3% per month) and alloy steel in ingots or other primary forms, semi-finished products of other alloy steel (-12.5% per month).
In value terms, the most traded types of raw steel and steel semi-finished products in China were iron or non-alloy steel; semi-finished products thereof ($294M), stainless steel in ingots or other primary forms; semi-finished products of stainless steel ($250M) and alloy steel in ingots or other primary forms, semi-finished products of other alloy steel ($13M), together comprising 99.9% of total imports. These products were followed by iron and non-alloy steel in ingots, which accounted for a further less than 0.1%.
China Raw Steel And Steel Semi-Finished Products Imports by Country
In September 2022, Russia (464K tons) constituted the largest supplier of raw steel and steel semi-finished products to China, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (108K tons), fourfold. Oman (44K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.5% share.
From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Russia totaled +17.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-10.0% per month) and Oman (-11.4% per month).
In value terms, the largest raw steel and steel semi-finished products suppliers to China were Russia ($245M), Indonesia ($238M) and Oman ($22M), with a combined 91% share of total imports.
Russia, with a CAGR of +13.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
