China Rice Import Price in August 2022
In August 2022, the rice price stood at $398 per ton (CIF, China), remaining constant against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 2.2% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $432 per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($595 per ton), while the price for India ($368 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
China Rice Import Prices by Type
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In August 2022, the product with the highest price was husked (brown) rice ($944 per ton), while the price for broken rice ($399 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by paddy rice (+103.6%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
China Rice Imports
In August 2022, purchases abroad of rice decreased by -3% to 482K tons, falling for the second consecutive month after three months of growth. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 with an increase of 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 659K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rice imports shrank modestly to $192M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 when imports increased by 17% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 275K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to August 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
China Rice Imports by Type
Broken rice (111K tons), semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice (91K tons) and husked (brown) rice (12 tons) were the main products of rice imports to China.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the biggest increases were in brown rice (with a CAGR of +8.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, the most traded types of rice in China were semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice ($44M), broken rice ($44M) and husked (brown) rice ($11K).
China Rice Imports by Country
In August 2022, India (280K tons) constituted the largest supplier of rice to China, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, rice imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Myanmar (58K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (51K tons), with an 11% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from India amounted to +13.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Myanmar (-7.8% per month) and Pakistan (-16.9% per month).
In value terms, India ($103M) constituted the largest supplier of rice to China, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($25M), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 12% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from India totaled +15.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+7.4% per month) and Myanmar (-7.7% per month).
