U.S. Rice Export Price per Ton in August 2022
In August 2022, the rice price per ton stood at $730.3 (FOB, US), waning by -10% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to August 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2022 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $811.5 per ton in July 2022, and then dropped in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1.2K per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($310.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Rice Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice ($954.6 per ton), while the average price for exports of paddy rice ($427.9 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: milled rice (+2.7%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Rice Exports
In August 2022, approximately 197K tons of rice were exported from the United States; rising by 17% on July 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment.
In value terms, rice exports reached $144M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 with an increase of 21% m-o-m. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $179M. From July 2022 to August 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
U.S. Rice Exports by Type
Semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice (106K tons), paddy rice (79K tons) and husked (brown) rice (8.3K tons) were the main products of rice exports from the United States, together accounting for 98% of total exports. These products were followed by broken rice, which accounted for a further 1.7%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by brown rice (with a CAGR of +2.1%), while the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice ($101M) remains the largest type of rice exported from the United States, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by paddy rice ($34M), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by husked (brown) rice, with a 4.5% share.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: paddy rice (-4.4% per month) and husked (brown) rice (+1.1% per month).
U.S. Rice Exports by Country
Haiti (38K tons), Panama (28K tons) and Japan (26K tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from the United States, with a combined 47% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 42%.
From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +116.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($31M), Haiti ($24M) and Canada ($20M) were the largest markets for rice exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 52% share of total exports. Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Among the main countries of destination, Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +102.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
