Secondary Aluminum Prices in the United States

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Export Price per Ton in August 2022

In August 2022, the secondary aluminum price per ton amounted to $4.2K (FOB, US), growing by 26% against the previous month. Over the last seven-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2022, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($4.7K per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($2.6K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Exports

In August 2022, approximately 6.6K tons of secondary aluminum were exported from the United States; reducing by -31.7% compared with the month before. Overall, total exports indicated pronounced growth from January 2022 to August 2022: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports decreased by -35.6% against April 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2022 with an increase of 34% month-to-month.

In value terms, secondary aluminum exports dropped to $28M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from January 2022 to August 2022: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +6.6% over the last seven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2022 figures, exports decreased by -20.7% against June 2022 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when exports increased by 28% m-o-m.

U.S. Secondary Aluminum Exports by Country

Malaysia (3.6K tons) was the main destination for secondary aluminum exports from the United States, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, secondary aluminum exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (1.2K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Canada (1.1K tons), with a 17% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Malaysia amounted to +31.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (-14.1% per month) and Canada (+1.9% per month).

In value terms, Malaysia ($17M) remains the key foreign market for secondary aluminum exports from the United States, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($3.8M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 12% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Malaysia stood at +37.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Mexico (-13.6% per month) and Canada (-0.1% per month).
