U.S. Semiconductor Device Export Price in December 2021
In December 2021, the semiconductor device price stood at $7.6 per unit (FOB, US), rising by 2.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2021 an increase of 31% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $14.6 per unit in July 2021; however, from August 2021 to December 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($37.5 per unit), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($600 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Costa Rica (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
U.S. Semiconductor Device Exports
In December 2021, shipments abroad of semiconductor devices decreased by -9.6% to 18M units, falling for the second consecutive month after three months of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2021 when exports increased by 112% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 27M units in October 2021; however, from November 2021 to December 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semiconductor device exports declined to $133M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2021. In general, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from January 2021 to December 2021: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.5% over the last eleven-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, exports decreased by -13.6% against October 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2021 when exports increased by 45% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 153M units in October 2021; however, from November 2021 to December 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Semiconductor Device Exports by Country
Malaysia (8.2M units) was the main destination for semiconductor device exports from the United States, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, semiconductor device exports to Malaysia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (1.7M units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Mexico (1.6M units), with a 9% share.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the average monthly growth rate of volume to Malaysia stood at +25.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+9.0% per month) and Mexico (+2.1% per month).
In value terms, Thailand ($33M) remains the key foreign market for semiconductor device exports from the United States, comprising 25% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($15M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Costa Rica, with an 8.7% share.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the average monthly growth rate of value to Thailand totaled +3.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: China (+1.2% per month) and Costa Rica (-1.8% per month).
