U.S. Semiconductor LED Import Price in December 2021
In December 2021, the semiconductor led price amounted to $729 per thousand units (CIF, US), rising by 7.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2021 when the average import price increased by 36% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1.1 per unit in February 2021; however, from March 2021 to December 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($4.0 per unit), while the price for China ($85.0 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
U.S. Semiconductor LED Imports
In December 2021, approximately 867M units of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) were imported into the United States; declining by -13.7% on November 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% from January 2021 to December 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2021 with an increase of 34% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 1.1B units in June 2021; however, from July 2021 to December 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, semiconductor LED imports reduced to $632M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $948M. From April 2021 to December 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
U.S. Semiconductor LED Imports by Country
In December 2021, China (376M units) constituted the largest semiconductor LED supplier to the United States, accounting for a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, semiconductor LED imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (153M units), twofold. Malaysia (136M units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China stood at +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Japan (-0.3% per month) and Malaysia (+5.0% per month).
In value terms, the largest semiconductor LED suppliers to the United States were Malaysia ($122M), Vietnam ($103M) and Thailand ($94M), together comprising 51% of total imports. South Korea, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese) and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +5.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
