Silk Yarn Prices in China

China Silk Yarn Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the silk yarn price stood at $54.1 per kg (FOB, China), reducing by -6.3% against the previous month. Over the last eight months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2022 an increase of 32% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $59,212 per ton. From March 2022 to September 2022, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($100 per kg), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($15.3 per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+16.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Silk Yarn Export Prices by Type

As there is only one major exported type of silk yarn, the average price level is determined by prices for silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale; silk-worm gut amounted to +13.6% per month.

China Silk Yarn Exports

In September 2022, overseas shipments of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste increased by 17% to 268 tons for the first time since May 2022, thus ending a three-month declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 when exports increased by 66% month-to-month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 327 tons; afterwards, it flattened through to September 2022.

In value terms, silk yarn exports stood at $14M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 64% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 16K tons in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China Silk Yarn Exports by Type

Silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale (53 kg) was the largest type of silk yarn exported from China, with a approximately 100% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale amounted to -28.6%.

In value terms, silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale ($9.6K) emerged as the largest type of silk yarn exported from China.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale stood at -18.9%.

China Silk Yarn Exports by Country

India (75 tons), Japan (48 tons) and Italy (40 tons) were the main destinations of silk yarn exports from China, with a combined 61% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, Vietnam, the United States, France, Nepal, Thailand, Iraq, South Korea and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 31%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +209.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($3.3M), Japan ($2.8M) and Slovenia ($2.1M) constituted the largest markets for silk yarn exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 56% of total exports. Italy, the United States, France, Thailand, South Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam and Iraq lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

France, with a CAGR of +246.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
