Silk Yarn Prices in the United States

U.S. Silk Yarn Import Price per Ton in August 2022

In August 2022, the silk yarn price per ton amounted to $45.1K (CIF, US), growing by 9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 33% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $92.6K per ton in January 2022; however, from February 2022 to August 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($84.1K per ton), while the price for China ($33.1K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Silk Yarn Import Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale ($76.5K per ton), while the price for silk yarn ($38.3K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by spun yarn (+2.0%), while the prices for the other products experienced a decline.

U.S. Silk Yarn Imports

In August 2022, imports of silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste into the United States soared to 32 tons, growing by 19% on the previous month. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 with an increase of 171% month-to-month. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in August 2022.

In value terms, silk yarn imports soared to $1.4M (IndexBox estimates) in August 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 133% against the previous month. Imports peaked in August 2022.

U.S. Silk Yarn Imports by Type

In August 2022, silk yarn (25 tons) constituted the largest type of silk yarn supplied to the United States, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, silk yarn exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, yarn spun from silk waste (3.6 tons), sevenfold.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of silk yarn totaled +21.7%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: yarn spun from silk waste (+31.5% per month) and silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale (+8.7% per month).

In value terms, silk yarn ($940K) constituted the largest type of silk yarn supplied to the United States, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by silk yarn and yarn spun from silk waste, put up for retail sale ($257K), with an 18% share of total imports.

U.S. Silk Yarn Imports by Country

In August 2022, China (24 tons) constituted the largest silk yarn supplier to the United States, accounting for a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, silk yarn imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (3.4 tons), sevenfold. Japan (2.2 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from China amounted to +28.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+7.3% per month) and Japan (+8.7% per month).

In value terms, China ($779K) constituted the largest supplier of silk yarn to the United States, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($282K), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to August 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from China totaled +7.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+11.9% per month) and Japan (+11.4% per month).
