Soap And Detergent Prices in China

China Soap And Detergent Import Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the soap and detergent price stood at $2,240 per ton (CIF, China), shrinking by -12.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 an increase of 21% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,699 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to September 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2022, the country with the highest price was Japan ($16.1 per kg), while the price for Indonesia ($587 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Soap And Detergent Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was soap ($10.3 per kg), while the price for non-soap washing and cleaning preparations amounted to $1,066 per ton.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by soap (+3.9%).

China Soap And Detergent Imports

In September 2022, supplies from abroad of soap and detergents increased by 11% to 135K tons, rising for the second consecutive month after three months of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2022 with an increase of 14% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 136K tons. From May 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, soap and detergent imports declined slightly to $301M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 19% m-o-m. As a result, imports attained the peak of $350M. From June 2022 to September 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China Soap And Detergent Imports by Type

In September 2022, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations (117K tons) constituted the largest type of soap and detergent supplied to China, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, non-soap washing and cleaning preparations exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, soap (17K tons), sevenfold.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of import of non-soap washing and cleaning preparations was relatively modest.

In value terms, soap ($176M) and non-soap washing and cleaning preparations ($125M) appeared to be the most imported types of soap and detergents in China.

China Soap And Detergent Imports by Country

In September 2022, Indonesia (60K tons) constituted the largest supplier of soap and detergent to China, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, soap and detergent imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (26K tons), twofold. Malaysia (8.6K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.4% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Indonesia totaled +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Brazil (-2.0% per month) and Malaysia (-0.2% per month).

In value terms, Japan ($74M) constituted the largest supplier of soap and detergent to China, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($35M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with an 11% share.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Japan amounted to +3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-3.4% per month) and South Korea (-0.8% per month).
